Household Hazardous Waste

Many products we use in our everyday lives contain potentially hazardous materials that require special attention and care when disposed of. Household hazardous waste is any material that can cause serious threats to humans, wildlife, and the environment when improperly disposed. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage or down the drain.

Hazardous waste can be one or more of the following: toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive.  We encourage you to consider non-toxic alternatives for some of the products you use.

ELECTRONIC WASTE (E-WASTE)

Before tossing out your electronic devices (anything with a plug, cable, or battery), consider donating or selling your gently used or repairable items. If the item cannot be repaired, it should be properly recycled.

The City of Vallejo has several options available for residents looking to recycle their e-waste responsibly.

Examples of electronic waste include: Microwaves and other small household appliances, televisions, computer monitors and towers, cell phones, DVD players, printers, hair dryers, and more.

IMPORTANT: Electronic and universal waste, such as fluorescent tubes and consumer batteries, are prohibited from the trash. These items contain a variety of hazardous components like lead, cadmium and mercury, arsenic and flame retardants. When dumped in a landfill, these materials can contaminate the soil and ground water, harming the environment and surrounding communities.

WHERE TO DROP OFF E-WASTE
You can drop off electronic items at the Recology Vallejo Materials Recycling Facility located at 2021 Broadway Street. Drop-off hours are 8AM-3:30PM, Thursday-Saturday. No appointments are necessary. Residents must be able to unload the materials they bring in. Visit Recology Vallejo's Electronic & Universal Waste page for a list of accepted items.

Visit CalRecycle's E-Waste Drop-off Locator for additional drop-off sites and organizations that recover unwanted electronics in your area.

You may also drop off select items to the original manufacturer:

MEDICATION & SHARPS DISPOSAL

It is important to properly dispose of unused prescription medications and other pharmaceutical waste to prevent them from ending up in the hands of children, on the streets, or in our waterways.

Ask your pharmacists if they accept take-backs of pharmaceuticals.

Several Costco and Kaiser pharmacies sell pre-addressed, pre-paid mailers for customers to send unwanted medicines to a certified disposal facility. Free medicine take-back boxes are available at the Kaiser Vallejo 24-hour pharmacy located at 975 Sereno Drive.

PAINT
There are many ways to recycle paint through California’s Paint Stewardship Program. Since its start in 2012, PaintCare has established over 650 drop-off sites across the state where the residents and businesses can bring unwanted, leftover paint for recycling. Most of these drop-off sites are at paint retailers (e.g. paint, hardware, and home improvement stores) that have voluntarily joined the program. These sites accept paint whenever they are open during regular business hours and open to all California residents and businesses. Visit the PaintCare Drop-off Site Locator to find a site conveniently located near you.
