City Council Priority: Enhance the Waterfront

At the Council Goal Setting in March 2019, the Council expressed a desire to continue efforts to enhance the Waterfront, and designated this Tier 2 priority.

Listed below are a number of the action items associated with this priority:

Short Term - Activation Strategies:

  • Identify phasing for waterfront artwalk park
  • Lighting improvements/wayfinding signs
  • Coordinate with the ferry (on-board advertising)
  • Continue applying for grants

Mid-term Action Items:

  • Continue to work on connecting waterfront and downtown
  • Complete construction ready waterfront artwalk park plans
  • Initiate community fundraising for waterfront artwalk park

Longer Term Goal:

  • Get waterfront park design completed

UPDATE – OCTOBER 6, 2019: CITY SPONSORS VALLEJO WATERFRONT WEEKEND

A. The City Sponsors the Sixth Annual Vallejo Waterfront Weekend

The Vallejo Waterfront Weekend attracted thousands of visitors from all over the Bay Area and beyond on Oct. 5 and 6, 2019. Created for the community, by the community, this event shows Vallejo at its finest. The City's sponsorship helped keep admission free while Vallejo showcased the waterfront's improvements and potential.

B. Attractions to Highlight the Waterfront

Visitors enjoyed classic attractions such as the Whaleboat Regatta, Classic Car Show, a SolTrans Guided Bus Tour, a Kornhole Tournament, Laser Tag, Cross Fit Challenge, Ferry Tour of the Carquinez Straits, and Touch-a-Truck. The weekend also offered live music, a Kids Zone and numerous sporting and endurance events, such as the Half Marathon, 10k, 5k, or Glo Run. The Celebrity Dunk Tank features many of Vallejo's public figures.

UPDATE – OCTOBER 2019: CITY AWARDS CONTRACT FOR WATERFRONT PARK

In October 2019, the City awarded a contract for Waterfront Park design to David Gates and Associates. On October 1, 2019, the City Manager’s Office held a stakeholder meeting regarding naming of the park and presented recommendations to the City Council on November 12 2019.

UPDATE – OCTOBER 4, 2019: PUBLIC WORKS IMPROVES MARE ISLAND PAVING AND LIGHTING

On October 4, 2019, the Public Works Department made lighting and pavement repairs to Board Walk and Mare Island Brewery parking lot. The lighting will be increased to four fixtures and approximately 400 watts versus the now approximately 100 watts.
